The Hertsmere Constituency Labour Party is actively campaigning on the following issues

  • Health:
    • Since Labour came to office in 1997, waiting lists are down, investment is up, and there are 2,975 more nurses and 659 more doctors caring for patients in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

Labour Councillors have been involved in the many discussions taking place amongst the two principal Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) with main responsibility for residents in Hertsmere.

The West Hertfordshire PCT is currently conducting a consultation process to determine the best way forward in providing services for the people of the area. Many Labour Councillors and other members of the local Labour Party have attended many of the public meetings and have submitted responses to the PCT.

Hertsmere does not have it's own main hospital in the area, but relies on services provided by neighbouring PCTs. The local Labour Councillors have been active in asking for more resources for the community. We are still applying pressure on the local PCT to provide more GP services.

  • Education: better funding for Hertsmere schools
    • education - sure start

Since 1997, standards in our schools have risen across the board and there are now 780 more teachers helping children in Hertfordshire Local Education Authority.

In recent years the area has seen increases in investment in education. Standards continue to improve and several entirely new schools have opened including Yavneh College on the old Hillside School site in Borehamwood.

  • More people working
    • Unemployment is down by 28 per cent in Hertsmere and around 800 people have got jobs thanks to Labour's New Deal in Hertsmere since 1997.

Current levels of employment in the country are the highest ever recorded. Currently there are 29.5 million people employed, up 152,000 over the last quarter. The figures for unemployment continue to fall, down another 39,000 in February 2008, currently standing at slightly below 1.6 million. The amount of available vacancies continues to increase.

The number of people claiming jobseekers allowance is at the lowest level since 1975 with the numbers falling 1,200 to 794,000.

  • Law & Order:
    • Our streets are safer, crime is down and there are now 375 more police officers fighting crime in Hertfordshire Police Force than in 1997.

    PCSOs
  • Pensioners:
    • In Hertsmere, the winter fuel allowance warmed the homes of 18,345 pensioners in February 2004 and Labour is helping all pensioners to enjoy a decent and secure retirement. 3,133 pensioner households in Hertsmere are now benefiting from Pension Credit, with a local average award of £43.09

In the last budget the Chacellor announced further increases in the fuel allowances for those aged over 70 and those aged over 80.

  • Local Fire Services:
    • The future of local fire services continues to cause concern for us and many other citizens across the Borough.

The closure of Radlett Fire Station came as a shock to many people right across the Borough. This badly engineered decision affects not just those who live in and around Radlett but has serious consequences for everyone living in or travelling through the Borough.

It should be highlighted that every single Labour Councillor on the County Council voted against the series of fire station closures. Three out of the four Conservative County Councillors who represent Hertsmere voted to close Radlett Firestation. The fourth County Councillor in Hertsmere, Jean Heywood, in a breathtaking display of political opportunism voted to keep Radlett Firestation open but voted to close Bovingdon and the other local firestaions.

The other local firestations were in exactly the same position as Radlett; excellent, efficient firesations needed and wanted by their local community. It was clearly expedient for Councillor Heywood to vote to close those firestations, calculating that their demise wouldn't hit her politically.
