It's about time that the Labour Group in Hertsmere dissociated itself from the current position over the waste ground next to the
Venue.
Residents will no doubt remember that between 1995 and 1999, when the Labour Group was in power, we initiated the scheme to replace the old
Venue and run down swimming pool with a brand new Leisure Facility. The total cost of the project was to have been around £19 million. With the overwhelming support of the residents, the Borough Council approved the scheme.
When the elections in 1999 handed power to the Conservative administration, their first action was to scrap the building of the theatre and
community hall. That decision by the Tories was politically spiteful and wasted approximately £8 million of council tax payers money.
We opposed that decision then as we oppose the proposals to build a hotel on that forlorn site now.
In your letters page over the last few weeks, residents have felt it necessary to raise this issue once again and we, the Hertsmere Labour Group, fully support their concerns.
However, the Tory administration are in control, and it is clear that their Councillors who represent parts of this town are only too willing to ignore the wishes of the residents they purport to represent. The leaders of this Tory adminsitration have no connection with the town but seem to make sure that facilities in Radlett and Potters Bar do alright.
