u-turn by Conservative Council
Families will now not be charged for events during a Town Festival event after pressure from Labour Councillors forced a Council U-Turn.
Conservative Councillors had previously proposed a charge for residents using rides on Families Day during the Town Festival.
Following a meeting of the Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council it was finally agreed that there would now be no charges for rides and activities on Families Day, 5th July 2008. Had charges been applied this would have been the first time the Town Council would have asked residents for money for this event.
Conservative Council Leader Morris Bright first suggested the idea of introducing charges for Families Day at a meeting of the Council in March 2008. At that time Labour Councillors Peter Hedges, Ernie Butler and Richard Butler strongly criticised the idea.
Councillor Ernie Butler said
"Families Day should be the one day where people shouldn't have to worry about finding £20 or £30 to pay for rides. We're not exactly Thorpe Park. People have already paid their taxes for this day, a day for everyone, not just for those who can afford it. I always thought it was a rather stupid idea to charge people but It's good to see that they have now found sense"
