Labour Councillors won the vote on a motion insisting that the County Council improves its performance on road and pavement repairs throughout the Borough. The vote was won unanimously on a motion put to the Council last night by Councillor Ian Feeney (Labour, Borehamwood Brookmeadow ward) and Councillor Ann Harrison (Labour, Borehamwood Cowley Hill ward). The motion read: "This Council recognises that the level of road and pavement maintenance in Hertsmere is not of a high enough standard and insists that the County Council present their plans for improving the Borough's roads to members of this authority as soon as possible."
Of the three Conservative County Councillors present* at the meeting only one stood to defend the County's position by stating his belief that Hertsmere's roads were no worse than anyone else's.It was stated by the Council Leader that Hertsmere Borough Council could expect these detailed plans to be presented by the County Council at the next Hertsmere Highways Partnership Joint Members Panel meeting on 29th April 2008.
Notes:In 1996/7 the last settlement for road repairs to Hertfordshire County Council from the last Conservative Government was £500 million. The Labour Government has since increased this amount by 100% to over £1 billion.
