Why I will stand down from role as Labour councillor [March 8th 2007]
letter to local press
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Brookmeadow ward for placing their trust in me in electing me as their councillor for the past six years. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to represent them for that period.
My decision to stand down in May is about believing in the principle of being honest. Had I sought election for a four-year term knowing that my wife and I would be leaving the area in two years or so would not have been true to that principle.
In thanking the residents, I must also thank the Labour Party in Hertsmere for selecting me originally. It has been an honour to represent the party. Can I also thank the Labour group for allowing me to lead it over the past three years and all of the party workers.
I am, of course, around until May 3 and will continue to carry out my duties as a councillor for the remaining period of the term.
I have been involved in the political scene in this area for the past 25 years, ten overall as a borough councillor and a four-year term as a town councillor, with the last year, 1994/5, as town mayor.
I have enjoyed my time and my involvement and have always relished the challenges that have presented themselves over that time.
It has been, to say the least, a tough time for the Labour Party in Hertsmere, but I am sure that overall we will come out of it stronger, particularly as we have exceptionally good and able candidates ready and willing to take up the challenges before them.
While I will continue with my work at Hertsmere Worknet in Borehamwood, there are other projects that have been on hold for some time, which I now look forward to finishing.
