Letter from Councillor Leon Reefe, Brookmeadow Ward
I'm sure many of you will have read in last week's paper the report into the full Council Meeting last week at Hertsmere Borough Council.
Our intention, within the Labour Group, was to generate a full and frank debate on the performance of the Tory Councillors who are responsible for services provided by the council.
Unfortunately we did not manage a full debate, although it was certainly frank at times. A proportion of the blame for this debate not being as good as it should lie with us.
There are many cross-party groups that work extremely effectively and we would always wish to give praise where praise is due. But one of the roles of the opposition groups is to scrutinise the work of the Council and bring to account those in the controlling group whose performance is not up to standard.
We weren't able to achieve this last Wednesday and we take our share of the responsibility. When the public express their frustrations with the local Council over decisions they believe they have little or no control over, then we as Councillors must work harder to make sure that the public do have control. We must make sure that we hold ourselves and the Council to account.
I believe there exists a great need for more political debate, especially on local issues. The residents of this Borough deserve the very best that we can achieve and when we fail we, in the opposition parties, must make sure we recognise this and ensure that we do much better in future.
What I can promise to the people of Hertsmere is that we will not shy away from asking the difficult questions, we will continue with our stated aim of ensuring that the people have the best services possible and in the most efficient manner.
