Letter from Councillor Ernie Butler, Kenilworth Ward
I am very concerned about the Chief Fire Officers total misunderstanding of the people's feelings not only in Radlett but also in the surrounding areas.
It's OK to say it's not about money as it can't be. That's because it's only a very tiny part of the fire service's budget, there are other reasons why Radlett should be kept open.
I know Radlett will be served by fire engines from stations in Borehamwood, Mill Hill, Potters Bar, St. Albans, Watford and Garston, but has anyone every thought that all these stations except Borehamwood would have to use major roads to get to Radlett. We know that if one major road gets blocked they all seem to get blocked. It could take ages for fire engines to get to Radlett there and what happens if Borehamwood needs urgent backup.
We have a number of large businesses, Old People Care Homes and Hotels in our town, which if a large fire started would require two fire engines to get there fast. That's why I, and I am sure all my Labour Colleagues in Borehamwood, support the efforts of the Radlett Councillors and the leader of the Council Neil Payne, not forgetting our MP James Clappison, in getting this decision to close Radlett fire station changed.
