Humiliating U-Turn on Parking Charges [July 20th 2005]

The residents of Radlett and Potters Bar and the Labour Group in Hertsmere have forced the Tory led Borough Council into a humiliating u-turn on parking charges.

Proposals due to be ratified next week will allow for one hours free parking in Potters Bar and Radlett, mirroring, almost exactly, the proposals set out by the Labour Group earlier this year.

Peter Hedges, Labour spokesperson for Transport said

"I'm glad they've at last seen sense over this matter. It was never made clear why Borehamwood, Radlett and Potters Bar should be treated so differently when the parking problems were so similar."

"The Tory led Executive is moving much closer to our proposals, and the recommended solution, of a Borough wide scheme of parking provision and enforcement. "

"These changes are truly in line with the Borough's best interest. There will still need to be a review of the financial implications resulting from these changes, but we welcome this development. It does seem a shame it has taken them this long to come around to this idea."

Leon Reefe, Labour Group Leader said

"This is a much better solution for the residents of the Borough and for the people from outside the area who use the car parking facilities."

"This is almost exactly what the Labour Group has been calling for. When this issue was last discussed, in the Council meeting on the 15th June, we argued vigorously that the Tory Group needed to amend their existing policy. It now appears they have."

"It's gratifying that the residents of Radlett and Potters Bar have managed to persuade Cllr Pitfield and the rest of the Executive to perform this u-turn."
