Local Elections, 1st May 2008
A time for change and a time for action
The Conservatives have run the Borough and County Councils for the past 9 years. All the problems we as residents experience with local services are due directly to the policies they have implemented during that time.
The Conservatives have been wasteful in spending (more than £1 million overspent on Bin Collections in the past 2 years), slow in action and unwilling to take responsibility for their mistakes, but more than willing to blame each other or the Government for their own failings.
Our local council is still failing our residents. Even after eight straight years of above inflation increases in Council tax they still can’t get the basic things right, like bin collections and parking. Whilst our council promises much they fail to deliver the services already paid for by residents.
At a time when Council reserves are at their highest ever, over £17 million of your money in the bank, our towns are crying out for more youth clubs and activities, more services for the elderly and ensuring that our neighbourhoods are safe.
Projects like the Borehamwood's community theatre or New Village Hall are late or on indefinite hold. Roads and pavements across the whole borough are falling into disrepeair despite £10s of millions of direct grants from the Government.

Borehamwood Cowley Hill Ward |

Ann Harrison has lived in the area for 25 years and has represented Cowley Hill on the Borough Council for the last 4 years.
Ann is retired as an Engineering Manager, is Governor of Cranbourne and Hertswood Schools.
Ann says "The last four years serving the residents of Cowley Hill have been busy and rewarding. Some of the problems brought to me by residents particularly in housing have been heartbreaking and frustrating. The amalgamation of Ridgehill into William Sutton have made it even harder to address many of these issues. I shall continue to fight for higher numbers of affordable housing, opposed by the Tories, but much needed by our local residents.
I hope you will give me the opportunity to serve you for another 4 years." |

Peter Hedges |
|
Borehamwood Hillside Ward |
|
Peter has lived in Borehamwood with his family for over fifty years and runs his own small company as well as working in the Town.

He is governor of two schools in Borehamwood, Saffron Green and Woodlands, a volunteer driver for the Community Car Scheme, a volunteer for Borehamwood Red Cross and the Community Advocacy Project.
Peter says "Through my work and the people that I meet I see the huge benefits that good local projects can have on the lives of the people in my Town. I'm worried that our local council has become too remote, bureaucratic and ineffective and I would like to change that. Our local council can be a force for good and that can only start by getting the simple things, like collecting our rubbish, done well." |
